In case you do not know, Pentax is one of the sponsors for MySelangorStory 2011 bloggers and has been the official camera in this competition. I had the opportunity to check out the Optio E90, one of the cheapest range of Pentax cameras – but definitely not one to be slighted, for this is a one tough cookie. Read on to understand why.

The Digital Compact Camera – Pentax Optio E90 is a simple point and shoot camera that is designed for a casual shooting which is enhanced by a easy-to-view, high resolution 2.7 inch LCD monitor. The body is made of high-quality rubber casing with a simple uncomplicated design and easily managed buttons for easy use. This is especially good for those who likes to take photos all the time, the compact size makes it easy to bring in your handbag or even your pocket.

Due to it’s size too, I was able to carry it with me during our physical activities in MySelangorStory 2011 easily, in comparison for me to carry my DSLR. This allows me to capture my memories even though I am busy getting on with the activity at hand. The camera is powered by AA-size batteries, easily found at any convenient store near you.

As you can see the above two photos, I did not have to edit anything where the photos are sharp and the colors are vibrant. This was taken outdoor, daytime and with enough sunlight. Sunlight helps makes the photos sharper. The top photo was taken in Auto mode while the bottom photo was taken in Manual mode. Still, they look the same and the contrast level is very good too. The camera has Face Detection and Smile Capture settings that can detect up to 10 people.

The Optio E90 has a Hi-sensitivity anti-shake mode that even though I took the photos without a tripod and when my hand was shaking, the photos are still sharp. Since the Optio E90 also can record movies, it also has a movie shake reduction mode. It gives high-quality video-clips which is recorded at 30 frame rates per second. You can view video below:

There’s approximately 10.1 effective megapixels and also features a high-performance 3x optical zoom lens with a versatile 31.5mm wide-angle coverage. This camera is also a smart one which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode (when set at Auto) according to your surroundings – Standard, Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene Portrait, Night Scene, Sport, Flower and Candlelight – and optimizes exposure to produce beautiful and sharp images.

The additional “fun” factor of Optio E90 is Digital Panorama mode which allows you to take an extra-wide photo without having to lug big DSLRs with wide-angle lens to get the same effect. And you won’t believe this but it also has Frame Composition function to add fun frames to your photos. You don’t have to use Photoshop or any other photo editing software just to add borders or frames to your photos. Everything is at your fingertips!

In order to use the frame / border function though, a good lighting area is better than to use it at a dark-conditioned area or night time. Same as the other functions when taking photo using the E90, low light area does not produce sharper outcome in comparison to bright places.

There are also Digital filters to add artistic visual effects to your photos such as Fish-Eye, Twinkle and Brightness to add personal, artistic touches to recorded images. Not to mention a macro mode to take close up images of 10cm.

The macro photo above is cropped to show the close up of the photo. It is possible to take macro photos using the E90 however there is a little noise and if you do not use tripod, it can look a little blurry. The photo above was taken after my fourth try due to blur without a tripod. Luckily the “subject” was more than willing to sit still.
